S&L Named 2016 North American Partner of the Year by StarLeaf

In May, at StarLeaf’s Annual Partner Conference in London, England, S&L was named North American Partner of the Year for 2016. Jason Jones, President and CEO of S&L Integrated was at the conference to accept the award from StarLeaf Chief Technology Officer William MacDonald.

DiGiCo Rep Visits S&L

The DiGiCo representative visited our 7 Midway Road office Wednesday to demonstrate the DigiCo SD9 Mixing Console. S&L’s sales reps, technicians, and the rental team were treated to lunch and given the opportunity to test drive the SD9.

Roger Lord – Technician

Roger is the most recent addition to the S&L team. He has 15 years of customer service experience in the retail industry as well as countless volunteer hours as an audio tech for a variety of churches including City Church Tallahassee. He has been involved in setting up sound, video, and lighting equipment. He finds enjoyment mixing the sound for the City Church band and helping as a stage hand when needed to fix problems that may arise during the production of the service.

Lee started at S&L in January 2016, there is a lot to say about this guy…
Lee has a a degree in Show Production & Touring from Full Sail University. His past experience includes setting up and maintaining FOH (front of house) and monitor systems for concerts, events, and festivals, providing technical solutions as well as setup and strike of large-scale events and concerts. He also managed multiple volunteer tech teams for a mega church that included live audio and video production as well as live broadcast.

We’ve Moved!

S&L Moves Operations to Thomasville

THOMASVILLE, GA — May 09, 2016

When I began a rebranding project including developing a website in October of 2014, owner and CEO Jason Jones revealed then that a move to Thomasville was already in the works; S&L was growing and it had long been his wish to move his company to the City of Roses.

The 20,000 square-foot facility was designed by architect Raymond Finger. It features a massive storefront with floor to ceiling windows, chiseled concrete and redwood siding. The purpose-built facility has 13 offices for sales, support and clerical staff, an oversized lounge area, three restrooms, a lobby, a video conferencing-capable boardroom with breakout rooms and an area for up to ten technicians, racks and service audio/visual equipment.

The largest portion of the building is occupied by 12,500 square-feet of warehouse space for rental equipment and to serve as a holding location for AV gear awaiting installation.

Construction was overseen by JCI Contractors. Interior space colors and finishes were selected by Clay Byars who also oversaw the rebranding. Many of the cabinets and counters were built and installed by International Design and Display Group. Lots of preparation and perspiration went into the construction and move.

S&L moved from a 7,500 square-foot warehouse in Cairo’s industrial park.

Getting Closer To Moving In

Getting Closer To moving In

After a cold Tuesday morning site meeting this week, I walked around the almost finished S&L Integrated campus in Thomasville, snapping photos of the progress.

All the walls are painted in tones and tints of blue and grey. Bathroom fixtures are in, interior glass has been installed, the ceiling grid has been hung awaiting tiles and the front lobby wood siding is almost complete.

Outside earthmoving machinery is constantly grading, preparing for paving, NeSmith Nursery is planting trees and shrubs and irrigation is going in the ground.

Lots of things have to be completed before the twenty plus employees move into the new Thomasville home. Flooring still has to be laid, office furniture has to be purchased, as well as mirrors and hallway lights hung. Tables and counters need to be built and a number of other tedious tasks have to be completed before moving day.

On a cool fall evening in October the “Preservation Barbeque,Membership Picnic ”, honoring people who preserve historic landmarks in Thomasville and Thomas County was held at Greenwood Plantation.  Mary Lawrence Lang, Developement Director at Landmarks explained “We first used S&L last year at The Lapham-Patterson house, and were very pleased with the lighting. We had never had professional lighting before, Madison Keaton knew exactly what options would work best for our needs and venue”. Both events were outdoor events that needed to showcase the venue as well as create a relaxed ambiance for the evening.

Seven Midway Road Update 1.3

There has been a lot of activity at the future site of S&L in Thomasville Georgia.
Flocks of geese have made the five acre lot and retention pond their new home over the past couple of weeks, perhaps anticipating the delivery of building materials as much as the team at S&L.

After the concrete slab was poured and the cement cured, the structural steel was delivered to the site on August 11. The following Monday workers began erecting the 12,500 square-foot warehouse structure.

Sights & Sounds Upgrade

First Baptist Church in Milton is a large congregation house of worship about 30 minutes east of Pensacola. The church has traditional and contemporary services along with a variety of special programs and events.

The sanctuary was completed about ten years ago, however the audio system wasn’t suitable for speech or music, and the video and lighting system was insufficient for the size of the room. In addition, the church wanted to add HD cameras for broadcasting and recording events.

After an initial assessment and meeting with the ministers and music director of the church, S&L provided a proposal based on needs, including a new audio system, video broadcasting package, video projection, lighting, and an integrated control system.

The audio system installation included: identical Midas Pro2 digital consoles at the front-of-house mix position and in the broadcast control suite, with each desk having control of individual mix outputs. A BSS Soundweb audio network system was installed because of its ability to process the incoming signal from the Midas consoles, maintaining the digital signal path through the processor to output, and scalability with its digital audio bus. The speakers were OAP VS8 line-arrays with two dual fifteen-inch sub-woofers. The arrays were flown with dual eight-inch mid/high main speakers under the subs in a J-Array configuration above the stage. The new array, Crown CTS and MacroTech amplifiers provided consistent audio coverage throughout the room. To balance the entire system JBL long excursion, dual eighteen-inch sub-woofers were added in strategic locations.

A new outreach ministry for the church included the addition of a broadcasting package. Three Panasonic AW-HE120 PTZ cameras in the left, right and center positions give the operators the flexibility of a single operator remotely controlling the broadcast. A second volunteer operates a single JVC GY-HM790 HD camera, positioned at floor level for center, waist-up and following shots. Switching between cameras and presentation graphics is done with a Blackmagic Design ATEM HD broadcast switcher, to easily handle the entire full resolution, HD, uncompressed, digital video. In the broadcast suite, volunteers use two fifty inch HD flat screen monitors to see everything that’s going on in the sanctuary. The suite was also set up with JBL LSR4300 studio monitors configured for surround sound. Audio and video are captured with an Apple Mac Pro using Final Cut Pro X.

Milton was using a standard definition dual-projection system with screens that had been architecturally trimmed to match the aesthetics of the sanctuary, for their video presentation system. The projectors were mounted on the face of the balcony using long-throw lenses.

S&L decided to move the projectors closer to the video screens and to use Digital Projection E-Vision 8000 HD projectors. Not only are DP projectors bright and economical, installation is quick and smooth. The screens were replaced with HDTV-format wide screens and the trim-work was replaced by the church.

Presentation management was handled by ProPresenter software on an Apple iMac connected to a Kramer VP-790 high-end seamless switcher integrated into the hardware to handle switching between the ProPresenter computer, a Blu-Ray player, a broadcast feed, and other inputs.

The existing lighting system was comprised of a few ellipsoidal fixtures and PAR cans. The new system provides energy efficiency and the flexibility to change lighting colors at the push of a button or without changing gels, which was a goal for the church.  S&L installed additional ellipsoidal instruments as well as replaced all of the PAR cans with LED fixtures, and added two moving head fixtures for more flexibility and creativity. The new system not only met budget requirements but also provided smoother stage wash with beam-shaped control as well as full color mixing and wash capabilities.

Additional changes included the addition of flat screen television monitors installed in the lower lobby at each of the major sanctuary entrances for observers outside of the sanctuary and an additional flat screen monitor was installed in the green-room for musicians and vocalists.

A Crestron control system and digital media switching system were installed to manage integration of the multiple systems. A ten-inch touch screen control panel was placed in the front-of-house video booth to control complete system power sequencing, source switching for the lobby, green-room, and confidence monitors.

While the entire project took a few months to complete, the initial audio and projection installation was completed in one week while the broadcast suite, lighting, and control systems was completed in just over five weeks. It’s Official!

On a beautiful, sunny and warm May morning, the S&L team, family and ambassadors from the Thomasville Chamber of Commerce gathered at 7 Midway Drive in Thomasville, Georgia, to officially break ground for S&L Integrated Systems’ new facility. Jason Jones described the layout of the new building for ambassadors and friends.

Although the ground was broken a few weeks ago, the brief ceremony generated excitement from local business owners and Darlene Taylor, State Representative.

The new 20,000 square foot facility will feature 7500 square feet of office space for techs, salespeople and management as well as a lobby, showroom and conference room. Additionally, there will be a three-bay warehouse with a dedicated loading dock for semi trucks. The new building’s exterior was inspired by Starbucks in Seattle, Washington, and the interior design was inspired by Google headquarters in New York.
